You can collaborate and share documents and files with other people and if you have a smart phone or tablet with a camera you can link it direct to your Google account and automatically store your photos in your Google Drive and of course because you are syncronising all of your PC or Mac photos with your drive, when you access Google Drive from your phone or tablet, you can see your entire photo library. For each of the photos or documents uploaded, Google can recognise text and images in the files and builds a search index around your files. One of the great features of both versions is its search facility. Google had already started implementing changes to phase out the. The good thing about this new piece of software is that it will enable you to “backup and sync” photos not only from your PC or Mac but from USB devices and SD cards – all to the cloud. Google is replacing the old Backup and Sync app for desktop users with Drive for Desktop app. The mount point path remains the same, so you can still find all your files in the same places, but shortcuts to the application have been renamed to Google Drive.If you use Google Drive or Google Photos on the PC or Mac then this effects you, Google will start to remove these products in December 2017 with a view to closing them completley by March 2018.ĭon’t stress if you do use one of these products, however as Google will be replacing them with “Backup and Sync for Google Photos and Google Drive”. The branding in the product has also been updated to Google Workspace, the new name for G Suite. What has happened to Google Drive? Drive File Stream is now Google Drive for desktop. Backup and Sync will no longer be available as of October 1.
